However, there are subtle differences when a spouse is simply being difficult and one who is verbally and emotionally abusive. Abuse comes in many different forms, and there are numerous common myths that abuse is only physical, which is confusing and untrue. An emotional abuse or verbal abuse test is helpful in determining “Is this abuse?”

The first step is to clearly identify the situation. Once it is clear that domestic abuse is occurring, the spouse can take steps to protect themselves and obtain the help they need.
