Reflection #2 on 'Everyday People'
by Nicole C. Mullen
I am no better and neither are you
We're all the same whatever we do
Have
you noticed how old things are coming back in style? Just
look at some of the clothes around now, they look a lot like
those from the 60s and 70s. Well, the same is true in music.
Nicole C. Mullen has recut a very old song called "Everyday
People." And though this originally was a secular song, the
lyrics contain a grain of biblical truth. In the eyes of God
we are all the same, people who desperately need forgiveness.
Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God."
But thankfully, that's not where it stops. Paul tells us in
a letter he wrote to his friend Titus:
"He has saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have
done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the
washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit" (Titus
3:5 NASB).
We were all on our way to hell until we cried out to Jesus
and the blood of the Lamb cleansed us. The lines of the song
say that we are all the same no matter what we do. And that
is the truth in the sense that no matter what we do, we can
never earn a place in God's family. We all need to embrace
the sacrifice of Christ.
"But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been
manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for
all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all
have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified
as a gift by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ
Jesus;" (Romans 3:21-24 NASB).
Many people in Paul's day thought they could gain salvation
by doing the things written in the Law, but Paul clearly states
that the only action that leads to salvation is the humble
acceptance of God's gracious gift which is Jesus Christ, your
personal Lord and Savior. Many people today think like those
in Paul's day. They think if they are a good person or if
they do good deeds they will go to the heaven. But, as I have
said before, to go to the heaven of the Bible you have to
go the Bible way. And that is through Jesus.
As the lyrics of this song say we are all the same, we are
those who Christ died to save. He did not die just to save
the rich or the beautiful, the American or the blonde-haired
blue-eyed.
He died to save all everyday people. If you have never accepted
Jesus as your own personal Savior, let me encourage you to
do so today. We all need a Savior, all of us.

Jesus, just as so many other everyday people have.
