Reflection #1 on 'Running Just to Catch Myself' by Mark Schultz

I wave as my life passes me my every day

I think God has a sense of humor. The Bible says that He laughs at His enemies. In the song "Running Just to Catch Myself," Mark Schultz pokes fun at our hectic lifestyles. He sings a very busy song about a very busy life. But though the song is fun, the Bible has some serious things to say about our busyness.

Jesus warned His disciples and all of us of the price we would pay to follow Him:

"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Mark 8:35-37 NASB).

The Lord was telling people that they could not save themselves, that all of their efforts, their works, their profits would not purchase their salvation. To reinforce that point, He told a story about a man who was very prosperous. He had lots of land and was very productive and grew so rich that he could not store in his buildings all that he had gained. So he decided to tear down his barns and erect bigger ones. He thought having all the "stuff" would bring him security. Yet Jesus said:

"But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?" (Luke 12:20 NASB).

As we hurry through our day, it is easy to become so distracted by the busyness of it that we forget the point of why we're here. What are we to accomplish on this earth? Why were we created?

Well, we were created to have fellowship with the Father. And the work He gives us to do is work He wants to do with and through us. He never intended for us to hustle about too busy to spend any time with Him, our family or our friends.

If you find yourself trapped in busyness today, too overwhelmed to catch your breath, then stop and ask yourself the question Jesus asked-are you tending to your soul? I have always found that when I take a portion of the time He has given me and spend that time in His Word and in prayer, the rest of my busy life seems to fall into place. Let Him show you how to make the most of your life.

-Suzy C.
