Reflection
#1 on 'Butterfly Kisses' by Bob Carlisle
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night,
She talks to Jesus, and I close my eyes,
And I thank God for all of the joy in my life.
When
was the last time you listened to a child pray? I really like
to talk to children about God. Usually little kids have a very
interesting and refreshing perspective of God. Sometimes they
say silly things, sometimes they are just plain wrong, but often
they have a loving acceptance and humility before Him that is
convicting. It is this example that Jesus directed us to follow:
"And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, and
said, 'Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become
like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever
then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the
kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one such child in My
name receives Me'" (Matthew 18: 2-5 NASB).
The way up in the kingdom of heaven is down, down on your knees,
humbling yourself before the Lord.
"Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will
exalt you" (James 4:10 NASB).
To humble ourselves is one of the most difficult things God
asks us to do. The nature of this world is to do all you can
to lift yourself up. This world exalts the idea of the self-made
man or woman, but the truth is that we get every good idea,
every strength, every talent, and every great opportunity from
the Lord. We are His creation. To humble yourself before Him
and acknowledge your debt to God is tough on the old ego. But
it is the only path to truth and freedom.
In the song "Butterfly Kisses," Bob Carlisle sings about the
relationship between a daddy and his daughter. In the lyrics
he describes listening to her pray and how her prayers cause
him to humble himself before the Lord, thanking Him for His
mercy and provision. It is a great image.
Have you humbled yourself before the Lord today? Walking humbly
before Him takes purposeful action every day. As a Christian,
we don't humble ourselves once and then go on our merry way.
No, we are to stay in that position, like a child, looking up
to our loving Father with joy and gratitude for His mercy and
grace. If your prayers have lost that childlike attitude, take
a moment today and read Matthew 18. Review the Lord's commands
and then purpose to remain childlike in your love, trust, and
adoration of Him. -Suzy C.
