Reflection
#1 on 'Soldiers' by Out of Eden
If you were in trouble, whom would you rather have come to your
aid: the Lone Ranger or the U.S. Marines?
I'll
take the Marines. Granted, the Lone Ranger always beat the bad
guy in the end, but there's strength in numbers. That's certainly
the point Out of Eden is making in the song "Soldiers."
The request of the Maker,
It's a call for some soldiers.
So if you're not afraid to take a stand,
Then let me see you raise your hand.
Sometimes I worry that too many Christians act like lone rangers
instead of soldiers in an army. For example, lone rangers come
and go whenever they please; soldiers must follow a regular
schedule. Lone rangers have their own agenda; soldiers must
submit to a higher agenda. Lone rangers have little accountability;
soldiers must take responsibility for their actions.
So are you a lone ranger or a soldier?
The church is God's instrument for accomplishing His will here
on earth. Much of the Bible is dedicated to detailing how we
are to function as the church. I must confess that it amazes
me when I talk to Christians who aren't a part of any congregation.
I wonder to myself, When they read the Bible, are they missing
all the stuff about the church?
Instead of "soldiers in an army," Paul uses a different analogy
to describe our relationship to one another as Christians in
Romans 12:4-5:
"For just as we have many members in one body and all the members
do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one
body in Christ, and individually members one of another" (NASB).
Did you catch that? Each member in the Body of Christ belongs
to the others. No lone rangers allowed.
If you are, in fact, a soldier, then keep up the good work.
Consider this a commendation for simply doing your duty. If,
however, you must confess that you're more of a lone ranger,
then let me encourage you to become an active member of a church.
Soon. We need you, soldier. -Kerry O. Scripture Reference: Romans
12:4-5
