Reflection
#1 on 'Thankful' by CaedmonĘs Call
I am thankful that I'm incapable
Of doing any good on my own
What are you thankful for? Are you thankful that the Red
Sox won the World Series? Are you thankful that you were able
to go on that long overdue vacation? Or maybe you are thankful
that you finally got in touch with a long, lost friend or
family member. Whatever the reason is, it just shows that
we all can be thankful for something.
Yet sometimes it is just hard to be thankful. I have struggled
with that firsthand. Before my third son was born in October
of 2002, my wife and I knew that he would have some health
issues. We thought he was going to be born with a syndrome
called Pierre Robin, a condition with an undeveloped
jaw. It was worse than we thought, however. He was born with
more problems than we expected.
As I came into the room where my son was, I saw the doctors
trying to save him. My mind was racing with hurt, fear and
anger toward God. The word thankful was not in my vocabulary
at that point. When I reached my son, I immediately noticed
his problems, such as no outer ears and a pushed-in jaw. He
was diagnosed with a syndrome called Treacher Collins,
a rare disease with craniofacial defects. He was given a trachea
to help him breath and a feeding tube that led into his stomach.
It is really tough to be thankful. But when I look at him
now, over two years later, I know that he has a healthy outlook.
Even with his deformities, he is still my little boy.
Being thankful in these situations is difficult. We want
to run and hide or make excuses for the way things are instead
of accepting them. But that's not what the Bible tells us
to do.
Instead, it says, "Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise
his name" (Psalm 100:4, NIV). We should be thankful in
all things, even in the midst of adversity, because God has
given us so much.
God will give us the best things. He knows our needs. He
gave us His Son. That alone we can be thankful for each day.
Caedmon's Call says:
I can hear Your voice
I stand and rub my eyes and walk to You
Be thankful for all and give thanks to God.
