Reflection #1 on 'Ocean' by Ten Shekel Shirt

Something about the ocean
Makes me rise up and praise
Something about the heavens
Makes me stand in awe again

Have you praised God today? In the song "Ocean," Ten Shekel Shirt sings that the ocean and the heavens encourage them to praise. But we should also encourage each other to praise God, and the best way to do that is to praise Him yourself.

I remember a particular incident once when I was really down. Things in my life weren't working the way I thought they should. I did not understand what was going on. I was trying everything I knew. I was working hard. I was not holding any grudges; I was not involved in sin. Yet, I seemed to be in a hard place with no way out.

Well, I went to church, hoping something there would make me feel better. And I found it. Sitting in the third row was a woman I knew--a single mom who had just lost her job. She got no support from her ex-husband or her family. I knew that things had just gone from bad to worse for her. In her shoes, I would have been in tears; I would have been scared to death. But as the music started, she closed her eyes, a smile came to her face and she lifted her arms. I will never forget the way she raised those arms, like nothing on earth and nothing from hell could make her lower them.

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds" (Hebrews 10:24, NIV).

Well, her praise encouraged me that day and many days since then. Her memory still ministers hope to me in dark times. I don't think I ever told her that story. I wonder if others have the same kind of stories about you? Does your praise inspire others?

-Suzy C.
