Reflection
#1 on 'I Want to Know You' by Sonicflood
Pressing onward
Pushing every hindrance aside
Out of my way
Cause I want to know You more
Isn't it amazing how a song can take you back to a time in
your past? The song "I Want to Know You" has been
around a long time. I remember singing it with a group of
teens from a homeless shelter about seven years ago, then
with another group at a youth detention center a few years
later and then not long ago at a high school chapel service.
I guess some good songs just last forever.
But I think the reason this song has lasted so long is that
its lyrics touch the heart cry of every person, regardless
of their age or circumstances. We all, Christian and non-Christian,
want to know God. We are all seekers.
The lyrics come from a letter written by the apostle Paul
some two thousand years ago.
"Not that I have already obtained all this, or have
already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of
that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do
not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one
thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward
what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize
for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus"
(Philippians 3:12 14, NIV).
Paul's words convey the desperation of every generation.
Whatever it takes, I am pushing every hindrance aside. I am
going to follow the Lord. I am pressing on.
How about you? Do you want to know Him? Do you want to know
Him more? Then join in this song. Reach forward and don't
let habits, hurts or doubts hinder you. Pursue God. Find time
to read His Word, the Bible. Don't let anything stop you.
Because every time I sing this song, I can hear Him singing
back, "I want to be known."
