| There are many people who believe that speaking in tongues is real. I believe the Bible backs up the fact that tongues is real. But is it still used today? For what purpose? Many believe that all Christians are able to do it. Others believe that only some get the gift. And what about prayer language tongues vs. tongues for the edification of the body or interpretation. Please clear this up for me. I'm confused. thanks! |

Paul discusses the gift of tongues in 1st Corinthians. Included in his discussion of the gift of tongues, Paul discusses the abuses of tongues and rebukes those who attempt to make more of the gift then was intended.
In 1st Corinthians 14, Paul gives detailed instructions on how tongues are supposed to be used and for what purpose.
1-Cor14:2
For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God.
Speaking in tongues is a form of communication to God, i.e. a prayer. It is not for telling other people what they must or must not do. It is not the word of God, and it is not extra material left out of the Bible, nor is it an addition to the Bible.
1-Cor14:4
He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
The word edifies means to improve or instruct.
Speaking in tongues is to instruct and improve oneself it is not a form of prophesy.
The problem is not with the gift, but with the people who have it. Like any gift it can be mis-used but more importantly mis intrepreted. Some have enhanced the gift thinking that the statements which are spoken are somehow prophectic. The bible clearly states they are not.
There lies the problem, in which statements spoken under the gifts of tongue become false doctrine, which the new believer can be lead to believe theses falsehoods. We must always remember satan is always looking for a crack.
I must live by the Word, as the Spirt never works against the Word but always with and through it. - R.C. Spoul |

Dave, thanks! This does clear up some things. What I would like to know is if it edifies the believer, then you should do it only in private right? Then why do some believers all do it at the same time? Together?
1 Cor.14:27 I believe states to the contrary. Why do this together? Does this gift edify others who have it in some way? It seems God places people who have it together in Charasmatic churches. ex. Penicostal. Growing In Christ |

GIC,
I received the gift of the holy spirit back when I was 12. I only use it during my quiet time with the Lord, by myself. I was always told that it is where the Holy Spirit pours out your heart to God. You do not understand what the Holy Spirit is saying NOR DOES SATAN, so he cannot interfere with what your heart is pouring out to God. |

1 Cor 14:26-28
What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. If anyone speaks in a tongue, two--or at the most three--should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.
There is no need for an interpreter as the Bible calls for as long as there are no other non tongue speaking people in the group. We can all chose to pray in English in church; and there would be no problem; either all saying the same prayer or each one praying his own prayer out loud. The Bible is asking that all prayer, singing, worship in a church be understandable to all who attend. If not there needs to be an interpreter.
There is a lot of confusion about speaking in tongues, I'm not sure if the people themselves even know what they are saying or can translate the foreign words they speak.
My opinion is that Paul didn't want speaking in tongues to be thought of as some magic christian power or higher gift from God. That these people were somehow ordained for some higher purpose in the church or community. |

The Holy Spirit and the Gift of Tongues are two different things. I only use it? Use what? You don't use the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit uses you
Hopefully we learn to move out of the way, so the Holy Spirit can do some real magic in our lives and our capacity to understand God's plan more and more. These gifts are too see God's plan clearer each day, not to make ourselves more spiritual.
For me, every great spontaneous idea or writing that popped into my head, came from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit whispers to our minds, if we are quiet we will be able to recieve and use what we are sent, for God's purpose. And just as important realize those ideas came from the Holy Spirit, not form us. |
