There is all kind of proof for Jesus, but my friend and I were discussing the Holy Spirit, and the question came up, is there any other historical evidence that there is one, other than what the Bible says. And does everybody have it? Or just believers. Furthermore, what about the Old Testament believers? This Spirit thing is so baffling! Thanks

Hey there! Good to see you again.
I'm not aware of any 'historical' evidence or reference outside of the bible. My understanding is that the Spirit takes residence in a person's life when he/she becomes a believer.

Old Testament? Another good question.

Where is Anthony?

I think John 14:15-31, John 16:5-16 and 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 are good passages on the Holy Spirit. Also Acts is really wonderful because Luke mentions the Holy Spirit 57 times. Luke 3:21-23 talks about the Spirit descending upon Jesus when he was baptized by John and starting his ministry at this time. I have never come across anything historical other than the Bible and agree with Webacus on the Spirit becoming a part of you when you give your life to Christ. I did not find any reference to the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament on a quick review.

Here's I is . . .

I think you would be hard press to find evidience for the Holy Spirit outside of the Bible, because secular people wouldn't have access/experienced him. The Holy Spirit is in the Old Testament, and was noted in the Genesis. The are also example for a pre-incarnated Jesus in the book of Josha.

Most Christians only operate on two cylinders of the Trinity and forget all about the Holy Spirit, but it is the Holy Spirit which makes daily things happen.

Have you ever study or looked into the Miracle of Fatima?

Many people say, "If we just had a sign"

The miracle at Fatima was a sign The Lady of Fatima of 1917

Here are some other events which the Holy Spirit moved
Welsh Revial of 1904

Azusa Street Revival of 1906

The Holy Spirit is a spirit, whose work can be better seen through people.

Anthony

Interesting. Where did you find those sites/ articles?

I know I’m getting off topic... I wonder though if the Fatima story belongs in the same category? Because of its Catholic origins and “Mary worship” subject matter, I’ve always dismissed the story.

The miracle at Fatima, occured just as those other events I mentioned. Some Catholics do in fact worship Mary, but just as Moses and Elijah appeared to Peter, John and James. Is it so strange that Mary appeared to the three children at Fatima? We must be careful not to include or exclude events based solely on the demonination they occurred with.

LK 9:28-30
About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus.

As far as the other stories, they came from time, people and study

For me the Holy Spirit is unmistakeable. Sometimes it happens during a song or during prayer. It is a little hard to explain but I feel a definate warmth and slight tingling from my head to my toes. I feel His presence without a doubt. I definately know He is in my heart and I remain grateful for His love.
