What is the role of a Spiritual Director? What should I expect to receive from a spiritual direction session? What qualifications should he/she have? Is this equivalant or a good alternate to a mentor?

I have lots of questions...

These are men and women Chrisitans who call themselves spiritual directors. It seems almost like a one-on-one small group. You can go to them for learning how to hear and respond to what God is doing in your life, or for advice on spiritual matters. I don't know much about it was wondering if anyone else did and knew more.

So, this sounds like 'spiritual mentoring'?

Are these people trained and/or referred by your church?

They are trained, some are church leaders/treachers ex.pastors, but there doesn't seem to be a formal designation or association that I am aware of. It appears that anyone can hang their hat as a spiritual director. That is why I am wondering what to expect/look for.

Okay. I've done some spiritual mentoring under the auspices
of my church. In other words: A person phones the church
with some questions, and he may be referred to me for
one-on-one discsussion.

In that situation, the caller can feel comfortable with me,
knowing that I am supported by the church. I in effect
'represent' the church. The person can feel secure knowing
I adhere to the same Statement of Belief, values, etc.,
as the church.

So, I think under those circumstances, you could feel 'safe'
mentoring with a spiritual director from your church.

Does that answer your question?
