My spiritual walk has been off for some time lately. I haven't been to mid week services due to scheduling, my small group is using a study that I can't get into, and my alone times with the Lord are to say the least, the least! I went to mid week for communion and to get back to a fulfilling walk with the Lord. I got there and could not focus. When the worship started, I kept thinking about tomorrow, and the drive home, what happened to me today, blah, blah, blah. The distractions were getting to me. Sometimes when this happens, I close my eyes, and pray to the Lord to internalize the songs. The songs were not "touching me"! I was doomed. We took communion, and my prayer was, "Lord, reconcile me. Soften my heart, bring me to You." Nothing happened. I wanted to leave before the message. My friend, who I came with said no. The pastor started speaking and I started drifting. Looking around. About half way into the message it happened! I saw a mom with a young child in a wheelchair. I kept watching her, which is for me unusual, as I am unnerved by the scenes. She gently wiped saliva from his lips. It brought my thoughts to my children. I have been taking them for granted so much lately. Short tempered, abrupt, you name it. Everything in the church disappeared except them and His voice. I'm here, waiting for you. Be thankful, come in humility. The pastor spoke on. "Renounce your sins by doing what is right." Feel My presence in everything. Praise Me. God had answered my prayer tonight as He always does. I walked away humble at the thought of that mom, putting her child in a wheelchair everyday. I will pray for her and her son. I have burdens, but I now remember how much love and faith I have, that my Father loves me, and will be with me through them all. I saw Jesus tonight, through all the stuff. I heard the words of a Holy God. I am so thankful to be in the body.

It has been said to me that sometimes we don't go to church for ourselves, but for others. If that lady had not been there, God's plan would not have unfolded that way. So the next time you're considering not going to church, think about the body.

I know the uneasy feeling of what you were going through. Take a careful and prayerful look at Luke 11:24-26. I'd be interested in hearing how you think this may apply to living the Christian life. On a similar note, someone told me that if you have two dogs, the one you feed will be stronger than the one you starve. Sometimes it seems the world feeds one of our dogs but it's up to us to make sure the other one (the spiritual "dog") gets fed enough. God Bless.

This is wise council. I think that we can never have a complacent Christian life. We are either moving forward or backward. If we are not feeding our spiritual life we are depleting it. Thomas Chalmers calls what is needed is 'The expulsive power of a new affection.' This is a true statement. Who is Thomas Chalmers anyway?
