I have a question: Let me see how I can put this...
I got saved when I was eight years old kneeling by my Dad's bed with my Dad. I fell away during my 20's and just this past February, I rededicated my life to the Lord.
I know that when you are saved, you are to let go of your old nature and put on the new in Christ. However, I have a real problem....
I smoke cigarettes. I used to do drugs, but the Lord delivered me (Praise God). However, I cannot seem to let go of the cigarettes. Sometimes, I fear about my salvation. My ex- mother-n-law used to tell me that the scripture in the Bible (do not remember where) that says ...if you harm the temple, God will destroy you...she says that the temple means your body and that my smoking was harming the temple and that destroying meant I would go to ####.
My Dad smokes and he is saved and a very godly man other than that. I questioned his advice and he said - that it would not keep you from heaven, that you may not have many treasures in heaven due to certain things you have done.
Does anyone have any godly advice to share on this area? Please pray for me also, that I can let go of this bad habit - not just for securing my salvation, but for my health as well. |

I can't exactly empathize as I never smoked (I'm not sinless though, believe me!). My DH did though and quit when he met me. It wasn't easy for him, but I hated it and didn't want it around the kids. He did it slowly, with my nagging, and with the grace of God. He just started reducing the amount he smoked weekly. One cigarette less, then one more less, etc...He said the hardest part was letting go of that last cigarette. He was down to one on the way home from work at the end of the day and looked forward to it. Letting go of that one took maybe three weeks to a month. He finally did it though. He prayed instead of smoked on the way home and I kept him in prayer for strength and conviction.
I don't believe you go to #### for smoking. You are not "bad", just the habit is not so great! Bring it before the Lord and ask for strength and conviction. If you allow the Lord to convict you when you aren't trying your best to quit, maybe you'll be more motivated (that's how I broke many bad habits myself). Post on prayer requests as you begin a plan to quit and we'll keep you in prayer!

Kelly, I agree. Good advice.
Michelle, sounds like you are a [biblical] Christian. Be assured your eternity is certain.
We're still human -- We still sin, we still have some bad habits.
Hang in there. Don't beat yourself up.
Pray for a way to break the habit. A program? Medication?

Loose your salvation because you continue to have bad habits or sin? We would all be in a heap of trouble if that were the case. I know God intended for us to be forgiven.
Not conditionally forgiven, but forgiven forever. once and for all. Past and well as future sins.
God asks us to put to death whatever belongs to our earthly nature in Colossians 3:5. There are some other verses there which are great to read also about our former selves and what we should do with our "new" selves.
I will pray that He takes your desire away for nicotine. |
